City of Donaldsonville issues state of emergency for extreme cold
Mayor Leroy J. Sullivan Sr. has declared a Local State of Emergency for the City of Donaldsonville due to extremely cold weather expected to impact the area from Saturday, January 24, 2026, through Tuesday afternoon, January 27, 2026.
Forecasts from the National Weather Service indicate freezing temperatures and dangerous wind chills that pose a serious risk to public health and safety, particularly for the elderly, young children, and those without adequate heating or shelter.
As part of the City's emergency response, the Lemann Center, located at 1100 Clay Street, will serve as an official warming shelter for residents beginning Saturday and remaining open through Tuesday afternoon.
Residents are encouraged to protect exposed pipes, limit unnecessary travel during freezing conditions, check on vulnerable neighbors, and follow all guidance issued by local emergency officials.
City departments are actively coordinating with Ascension Parish and state partners to ensure public safety throughout this weather event.
For additional information, residents may contact City Hall at 225-473-4247 Ext. 8, the after- hours emergency number: 225-806-8215, or follow official City of Donaldsonville communications at donaldsonville-la.
Republic Services Update - Monday, January 26
The City of Donaldsonville has been notified by Republic Waste Services that garbage collection will not be conducted on Monday, January 26, 2026, due to hazardous weather conditions.
In the interest of public safety, anticipated bridge closures and the potential for icy road conditions make travel unsafe for employees and the operation of collection vehicles.
Service Recovery:
Republic Waste has advised that Monday’s scheduled service will be recovered on Thursday.
Residents are asked to secure their containers and place them out on their designated recovery day.
The City of Donaldsonville appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation during this period of extreme cold weather.
Please continue to stay warm and safe.
