Rescuer lauded for saving woman from flooded vehicle

Mayor Leroy Sullivan presented a key to the city to an Alabama woman who swam through flood waters to save a woman trapped in her vehicle.

Sue Ellen Mazingo, who has been in Donaldsonville with her significant other for a job at CF Industries, spotted the emergency during heavy rains on May 1.

Penela Skinner was leaving church when her car stalled in the underpass on St. Patrick Street.

Mazingo, a native of Butler, Alabama, said she is 5-foot-2 and the water was up to her shoulders as she approached the vehicle.

"She went out and risked her own life to save someone else," Mayor Sullivan said. "We thank you and appreciate you."
