Donaldsonville city officials honored the Lowery Middle School football team following its back-to-back Ascension Parish championships.

The Lowery Tigers, consisting of sixth-eighth grade students, compete in a league comprised of public schools throughout the parish.

Coach Thomas Washington, Principal Daryl Comery, and Donaldsonville High School football coach Brian Richardson each spoke in support of the student-athletes during the Tuesday, September 26, 2017 meeting.

The coaches stressed the importance of both academics and character building in addition to honing athletic skills.

In another matter before the Council:

Council members voted to allow two organizations to use the Lemann Memorial Center at a discounted rate.

The discount was agreed upon since the rental would serve as a fundraiser to benefit students of Donaldsonville High School.

The Donaldsonville High Alumni Association will use the center on the Saturday following homecoming for an event to raise funds for scholarships.

Also, the Donaldsonville High Athletic Booster Club will rent the building October 6.

Booster Club President Aaron Julien said the organization raises money for all sports at the school, including for equipment, food, and transportation to events.

Stipulations are in place prohibiting alcohol sales, and mandating security measures throught the Sheriff's Office.
