Donaldsonville Mayor Leroy Sullivan made a proclamation in recognition of an organization of grandparents and others who serve as guardians to their grandchildren.

The first annual Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Conference will be Friday, September 15 at Donaldsonville High School from 9 a.m. to noon.

Lunch will be provided. Guest speaker will be special education coordinator Shirley Grimes.

The local group meets monthly (on the third Wednesday of each month) from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. to share resources for grandparents and guardians.

Wanda August, parent facilitator, said the group allows guardians to make a connection with an outside support system.

"The mission is to grow together," she said. "We strongly believe what we teach determines the success of the children."

Many activities are planned through the group, which August hopes will continue to grow.

"Through the program, we've created such a bond," she added.

By being proactive, they hope to "reap what they sow" in the lives of the children.

On April 27, a free conference will be held in Baton Rouge. See for more information.
