Donaldsonville railroad project opens Bayou Lafourche flow to south Louisiana communities

A project to remove a levee and replace it with a steel bridge will provide better flow for water from Bayou Lafourche at its starting point in Donaldsonville to many south Louisiana communities.

A new bridge for the Union Pacific railroad removed a formerly earthen blockage for water flow. Previously, much less water could pass through two culverts in the levee.

The project is part of a multi-organizational partnership led by the Bayou Lafourche Fresh Water District.

Local officials join members of the project's crew for a photo along the bayou.

Future plans include the introduction of recreation on the bayou, including a park, paddling, enhanced boat launch and recreational dock made possible by a partnership with the Friends of Bayou Lafourche Commission, Fresh Water District, Ascension Parish, and the City of Donaldsonville.
